DD-wrt on Linksys Access Point

At home I have two Linksys WAP54G Access Points. One downstairs for my IPod Touch and MacBookpro. And the other one in my bedroom for checking my email wireless. The default Linksys firmware has enough shortcomings to give dd-wrt a try. Remember it’s warranty void and open-source so only feedback at their forums.

First of I downloaded the correct firmware using the dd-wrt search. Than flashed the first access point. Using the upload firmware flash method. This failed, the ap could not be booted again. Aerial was turned off but the ethernet port could be reached. So I tried the tftp method. It did the job nicely.

Connecting to the web-gui 192.168.1.1 (default) I had to change my subnet (duh). Logging in and setting up new user credentials took about 10seconds.

After fixing the other AP I wanted the two to work together. Primary AP and a repeater. But client also had to automatically switch between the two. To achieve it a WDS is needed. Wifiplanet put up a great article how it could be done.

So now I have a Wifi network who is repeated. Clients automatically switch between the two devices. I can watch streaming mp4 with my IPod Touch. Program JAVA, php late at knight in my bed, and listen to music on my NAS.
